About The Project

Hi! My name is Liana Rivas. I am an actress, a Senior in High School, and an Ambassador Girl Scout. I have been a Girl Scout since I was four years old and I am working on my Gold Award. For my Gold Award project, "Speak Up!", I ran acting classes for kids to enhance their public speaking skills. I noticed that my friends with acting experience are more confident speakers than my friends without acting experience. Since my first class presentation was in third grade, that was the age range I was targeting (grades 3-8). I ran two classes at my local library. I also ran a specialized class at a summer rec program in my area and then 3 classes a day with that program for a week with a performance at the end. At a different summer rec program in my area, I came in twice a week and taught two classes per session. At the end of the project, everyone showed great improvement! They spoke clearly and slowly, they didn't fidget, they reduced their use of filler words (such as "like", "umm", "uhh", etc.), everyone was volunteering, and they seemed generally more confident!
